En 2002, la chanteuse Carmen Elise Espenæs ( petite sœur de Liv Kristine : Leaves'eyes ) et le guitariste Chris Hector fondèrent le groupe de Metal folk norvégien, Midnattsol. Leur son est essentiellement du métal, qu'ils qualifient eux-mêmes de "nordic", avec toutefois quelques influences folkloriques et gothiques
dans ses mélodies. Leurs paroles sont largement inspirées de contes
populaires norvégiens. Leur premier album,
Where Twilight Dwells, est sorti en 2005. Les membres ont pour la plupart des projets parallèles : les guitaristes Daniel Droste et Christian Hector ont récemment uni leurs forces pour former Achab, un groupe allemand de Doom Metal,Chris Merzinsky et Birgit Öllbrunner jouent aussi dans le groupe R:I:P.
Le 10 juillet 2009, Midnattsol annonça que le guitariste Fabian Pospiech avait quitté le groupe pour se concentrer sur sa vie familiale. Le groupe a remporté le prix de «Meilleur Espoir» au Metal Female Voices Fest de 2009. En novembre 2010, le groupe a publié sur youtube une vidéo de Carmen annonçant le nom du futur troisième album: "The Metamorphosis Melody".

The new members were then identified in Chris Murzinsky (former drummer for Penetralia), Daniel Fischer (keyboard player), and later on Daniel Droste (guitarist) and Birgit Öllbrunner (bassist).
Their sound is essentially Symphonic metal, with some folk influences in the melodies. Although their sound can be classified as symphonic metal, the band prefers to call their style 'Nordic folk metal' because of the folk elements in their music and occasional Norwegian lyrics. Their lyrics are largely based on Norwegian folk tales. Their first full-length album, Where Twilight Dwells, was released in 2005.Chris Merzinsky and Birgit Öllbrunner are also playing in the band R:I:P.
On July 10, 2009, Midnattsol announced guitarist Fabian Pospiech had left the band to concentrate on his family.
The band won the 'Best Hope' Award at the Metal Female Voices Fest 2009 due to the majority of votes by the fans.
In spring 2010 they announced their return to the studio to record Midnattsol's third album from May to about July 2010.
